about

SOULSTICE is Brian’s second CD release as a leader and features a fine cast of contemporary jazz musicians. Included are Juno award winning saxophonist Phil Dwyer, bassist Jim Vivian, and New York drummer Billy Drummond. The recording was done in Toronto and produced by Canadian jazz master Don Thompson who also contributed three compositions and makes a guest appearance on vibes.

There is an atmosphere of vitality to the eleven tracks that comprise SOULSTICE. The programme includes a balance of original compositions and standards that sit comfortably in the mainstream of modern post-bop jazz. The musicians play some strong solos on a variety of feels and tempos. Noteworthy performances include stellar interplay between Phil Dwyer and Billy Drummond on Peregrine Blues, Don Thompson’s lush vibraphone on Solstice and Brian’s trio arrangement of How Deep Is the Ocean. Another highlight is a solid swinging version of the Vincent Youman classic Time On My Hands.
