about

Reaching out from the piano Brian Buchanan offers this beautiful solo recording. An offering that has depth and character and exceptional sound. Born out of Brian’s desire to capture the moods and music that have defined his jazz sensibility for more than forty years. The ten tracks on this recording include repertoire that is dear to the pianist’s heart and allow him to express his love and passion for his artistry. Brian has always excelled at playing ballads and includes a heartfelt version of ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ which honors the classic Duke Ellington arrangement. There is a stunning version of ‘More Than You Know’ played slowly and deliberately and allowing the tune to breathe. His exploration on ‘Never Let Me Go’ showcases his ability to look inside the composition and find a fresh and unique approach that is both pianistically vibrant and harmonically rich. There are also swinging versions of classic standards ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’ and ‘East of the Sun’. Brian pays homage to Thelonious Monk’s iconic ‘Round Midnight’ by stating the tune in its original form and arrangement. His own gospel composition ‘Goin Home’ demonstrates his versatility and love for the blues. The traditional Scottish folk song “The Water is Wide’ is a soulful exploration of a heartfelt love song that sounds much like a classic hymn.

‘SOLO SESSIONS’ would best be described as a legacy project. Diagnosed with cancer in 2019, Brian felt a huge motivation to document his work as a solo pianist and to allow the music to impact his recovery. His career has seen the recording of several fine ensemble projects including ‘Avenues’ and ‘Soulstice’ but he had never focused on creating a solo work. His desire was to record in an environment that felt like a live performance and offered him access to a great piano. This musical dream was realized with the support of several friends and Michael Lipnicki Fine Pianos in Calgary who facilitated use of an amazing Fazioli F278 Concert Grand. Capturing the music was accomplished by talented recording engineer Justin Guild who excels at working with solo piano. In Brian’s own words ... “I couldn’t be happier with the results of this project. The recording sounds fantastic. It defines my musical vision and gives me a recording to be proud of that I feel is a worthy offering to my family, friends and jazz audiences.”
